When an individual commits a crime, depending on the severity, that individual needs to be put behind bars while he is accorded training and other rehabilitation services. As in the case of ex-NFL player Chad Johnson, formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, I am not sure what training or rehabilitation procedure a correction center will offer him, a NFL player, for slapping his attorney on the behind.
Just in case you are not familiar with the story,
Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh was presiding over Johnson’s domestic violence case, in which he had almost sealed a deal with the prosecutors, that would have required only counseling and community service. Apparently excited about the deal that would have kept him out of prison, Johnson slapped his male attorney, Adam Swickle, on the butt.
Seeing what happened in her courtroom, Judge McHugh instantly went into a rant by telling Johnson that he wasn’t taking things seriously enough. Despite apologizing, Judge McHugh went ahead and extended Johnson’s probation to three months and sentenced him to a month in prison.
Before rejecting Johnson’s plea negotiations, Judge McHugh said:
“I don’t know that you’re taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this?” McHugh said, slapping the plea deal document down on her desk. “The whole courtroom was laughing. I’m not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn’t a joke.”
Johnson plea deal was pertaining to an August 2012 incident in which he head-butted his newlywed wife, Evelyn Lozada, during an argument. According to police report, an argument started after the couple returned home from dinner at a restaurant. Evelyn found a receipt for a box of condoms which led into an argument and subsequent head-butting. Johnson and Lozada were married for only six week.
Meanwhile, USAToday is reporting that Johnson's attorney, Swickle has asked Judge McHugh to reconsider the 30 days prison sentence she imposed Monday.
