In a case we are following out of Florida, Kaitlyn Ashley Hunt, 18-year-old has refused plea offer from the office of State Attorney Bruce Colton and is expected to face trial on June 20th for having sexual affair with another girl, 14-year-old.
Hunt, who allegedly had a sexual affair with a 14-year-old schoolmate, has rejected a plea-bargain offer from prosecutors in Indian River County and will face trial on charges of lewd and lascivious battery. The plea bargain would have kept Hunt out of prison on supervised release. However, Hunt’s mother and supporters wants the charges reduced to a misdemeanor. Their reasoning is that her sexual involvement with a 14-year-old freshman girl — which began inside a toilet stall at Sebastian High School was consensual, she should not be charged with a felony.
Hunt’s supporters have mounted an online campaign claiming that she is the victim of anti-gay prejudice – homophobic prejudice. Her supporters have also launched a “Stop the Hate, Free Kate” campaign that is supported by the American Civil Liberties Union, the gay-rights group Equality Florida, and the 501(c)3 non-profit Purpose Foundation.
