Democracy appears to prevail in Wisconsin despite Governor Scott Walker anti-union attack against the hardworking people of Wisconsin and the unwavering support he continues to receive from his wealthy friends. Richly funded by Americans For Prosperity, Koch brothers’ nonprofit Super PAC, and the GOP Super PAC Crossroads GPS, Walker is no match for the “people power” recently manifested by the unprecedented amount of recall signatures.
According to Wikipedia, a recall election is:
A recall election (also called a recall referendum or representative recall) is a procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before his or her term has ended. Recalls, which are initiated when sufficient voters sign a petition, have a history dating back to the ancient Athenian democracy and is a feature of several contemporary constitutions.
On last Tuesday, 1 million petition signatures were delivered to election officials. That number far exceeds the 540,208 needed and amounts to 23 percent of the state's eligible voters. While the one million recall petition signatures were being delivered, Walker was out of state, as has been lately, raising more money to defend himself and his agenda.
Walker legislation which he says was necessary to close the state's $137 million budget gap was intended to unfairly punish the unions for the state’s inability to effectively handle a mess it created.
Walker was elected in 2010 as part of a national Republican tide, and quickly pissed off unions and others with his aggressive moves that included effectively ending collective bargaining rights for public workers. Walker’s unpopular moves galvanized the people of Wisconsin into forming a “people movement’ which included demonstrations for more than a month. Demonstrators poured into the streets of Madison, Wisconsin and occupied the halls of the state's Capitol building.
We as a nation need to follow the no-nonsense example of the people of Wisconsin.
