
Octavia Spencer wins Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in the movie “The Help”
Octavia Spencer, 41-year-old, won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress in the movie “The Help”. Spencer played a maid in that Civil Rights era movie.
During her acceptance speech, Spencer quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’: "All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance."
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Spencer is the sixth of seven children. She attended Auburn University, received a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and made her film debut as a nurse in Joel Schumacher's “A Time to Kill” based on the book by John Grisham.
Spencer now joins the rank of other outstanding African American females that have won Best Supporting Actress:
Monique Imes-Jackson, aka Mo'Nique, Mo'Nique won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the drama "Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire (2010).
Jennifer Hudson was the third African American to win Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie White in Dreamgirls (2006).
Whoopi Goldberg was the second African American to win Best Supporting Actress for playing Oda Mae Brown in Ghost (1990). She had previously been nominated for Best Actress in 1985 for her role as Celie in The Color Purple.
Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to win Best Supporting Actress. She won for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).
