Hanan Ashrawi, an executive committee member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) joined Palestinians worldwide in condemning Newt Gingrich for his ignorant and racist remarks. According to Ashrawi, Gingrich has "lost touch with reality." His recent statement, according to Ashrawi, “shows ignorance and bigotry" and are "a cheap way to win pro-Israel vote." Ashrawi was speaking on the Voice of Palestine radio.
Fatah Revolutionary Council member Dimitri Diliani also added that Gingrich's remarks reflect "the ignorant, provocative, and racist nature of Mr. Gingrich," according to WAFA.
In what appeared to be a strategy, or lack of, to get pro-Israel vote, Gingrich said:
"Remember, there was no Palestine as a state, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. I think we have invented the Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs and who are historically part of the Arab community, and they had a chance to go to many places, and for a variety of political reasons, we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s. It's tragic."
Gingrich made the comments in an interview that was aired on Friday with The Jewish Channel, a U.S. cable channel. "I believe that the Jewish people have the right to have a state," Gingrich said in the interview.
Newt Gingrich is a Republican presidential candidate.
