
Karen Freeman-Wilson Wins Gary, Indian Mayoral Race – First Black Woman
After two previous attempts, the former Indiana Attorney General Karen Freeman-Wilson was finally elected as Gary’s first female mayor. Freeman-Wilson got 86 percent of the vote, defeating Charles Smith, a Republican. The last time Gary elected a Republican mayor was in 1938.
Freeman-Wilson ran on the following platforms: Economic Development – Jobs, Education, Public Safety and Accountability and Ethics.
