U.S. Census’ 2011 Poverty Report Indicates Black Americans are Catching Hell
Some depressing statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau on last Tuesday show that the number of poor children younger than 18 reached its highest level since 1962.
In their grim portrait of a nation in economic turmoil, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that the number of people living in poverty last year surged to 46.2 million.
Black children had the highest poverty rate at 39%, up more than 3 percentage points from last year.
The 2011 Census Bureau Poverty Rate Report shows that Black Americans were hit the hardest at 27.4%.
Between 2009 and 2010, the poverty rate increased for Asians. Their 2010 poverty rate 12.1 percent was not statistically different from the 2009 poverty rate. For Blacks, the poverty rate increased from 25.8 percent to 27.4 percent. For Hispanics, the poverty rate from 25.3 percent to 26.6 percent and for Whites from 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.
