President Obama kept his words when he said; he would bring "long-ignored claims of African-American farmers to a rightful conclusion." He is seen signing the .25 billion historic settlement in April 2010 .
As a potential President of the United States of America, the Republican Presidential Candidate Michele Bachmann, could benefit a little from at least a grade of “F,” in a Black History 101 class. Her latest lapsus linguae or “slip of the tongue” is in regards to the Pigford case, or the $1.2billion racism lawsuit settlement for decades of brutal mistreatment and racial discrimination against African-American farmers by a United States government agency – the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Pigford case was recently rehashed after Bachmann and Republican Representative Steve King of Iowa were touring flooded areas along the Missouri River. During their news conference, they separately answered a question about whether farmers affected by the flooding should be worried by proposed U.S. Department of Agriculture cuts.
Both Bachmann and King responded by criticizing the U.S. Government decision to financially settle the case. King compared the Pigford settlement to "modern-day reparations" for African-Americans. He said a large percentage of the settlement "was just paid out in fraudulent claims". He also criticized President Obama. President Obama plans to honor similar racist and discriminatory lawsuits filed by Hispanic and female farmers.
Bachmann seconded King's criticism, by saying, "When money is diverted to inefficient projects, like the Pigford project, where there seems to be proof-positive of fraud, we can't afford $2 billion in potentially fraudulent claims when that money can be used to benefit the people along the Mississippi River and the Missouri River."
President Obama kept his words when he said; he would bring "long-ignored claims of African-American farmers to a rightful conclusion." His administration reached a $1.25 billion historic settlement in April 2010 regarding a lawsuit claiming decades of brutal mistreated and racial discrimination against African-American farmers by a United States government agency – the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
