Memorial Day carries special meaning for military families such as Thomas B. Ware and Anna Ware, the parents of Sgt. Albert Dono Ware of Chicago's Pullman District District.
Sgt. Ware died, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the Arghandab River Valley of Afghanistan on December 18, 2009, from wounds he suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Sgt. Ware was from the Chicago's Historic Pullman District, Illinois. When he was twelve, his father, Thomas B. Ware, a Liberian, got him out of war-torn Liberia.
Sgt. Ware was in the military for six years and was assigned to the 782nd Combat Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Albert began his second tour of duty in August 2009.
"His bravery and sacrifice is something that is an example to me," Mr. Ware, Sgt. Ware's father said. "He did something that I don't think I could ever do."
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Memorial Day commemorates men and women who died while in military service to the United States.
