Today, February 20, is the 84th birthday of Sidney Poitier. The Bahamian American actor, film director, author, and diplomat is America's most heralded actor. He has made innumerable contributions to his country and mankind as a whole. A native of Cat Island, The Bahamas, (Sidney was born in Miami, Florida during a short visit by his parents). He returned to Miami at the age of 15 to live with his older brother.
On August 12, 2009, President Barack Obama awarded Poitier with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the United States of America's highest civilian honor.
Poitier is popularly known for receiving the 1963 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field. He is also the first African-American or Black to win that award.
Some of the films he is credited for: To Sir, with Love; In the Heat of the Night; Guess Who's Coming to Dinner; A Piece of the Action; Uptown Saturday Night; and Let's Do It Again.
