I first heard about Jamie Scott and her sister Gladys Scott about five years ago. On December 24, 1993, the two sisters were arrested in Forest, Mississippi for an alleged involvement in an armed robbery of two African American men. According to court document, the sisters collaborated with three teenagers and lured the two men down a road in Forest, where the men were robbed by the teens. The teens struck both men in the head with a shotgun and took their wallets containing a total of $11 dollars, according to court documents. At the time of the crime, Jamie Scott was 20 year-old and Gladys Scott was 19 year-old, both of them were mothers at the time of the crime.

The sisters were tried on October 4, 1994 and convicted of robbery with the use of a deadly weapon. The  have been in prison ever since. The three teenagers, called the “Patrick Men” because they were related, were charged in the case but made plea deals and served only months behind bars and released.

The story of Jamie Scott and her sister Gladys Scott have taken a momentum for pardon because of reports that Jamie Scott, 38, is gravely ill with kidney failure. A prisons spokeswoman described her condition as "medically stable", according to Choke Lumumba, the attorney for the Scott sisters.

The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) joined the momentum by asking Gov. Haley Barbour to pardon the sisters. Supporters have written letters to the parole board and planned to march and rally at the state Capitol. According to Lumumba, The “Patrick Men” who actually committed the crime, made plea deals and served several months behind bars are also asking the governor to pardon the sisters.

What do you think about this story? Was the punishment too harsh for the crime? Does it matter that no one was killed during the arm robbery? Does it matter that they only got $11 from the victims?

    This is a sad story!

  • New Day says:

Today Gov. Haley Barbour granted indefinite suspended sentences to Jamie & Gladys Scott aka The Scott Sisters. I am so happy for these ladies, and to know God is still in control. I am sad for the 16 years they spent incarcerated for a crime they didn’t commit, however, it’s time to rejoice for their new found freedom. For all those that never gave up on their cause you are angels…Their atty C. Lumumba did an internet radio show called “Center Stage” back in October of this year take a listen as he says he won’t stop fighting until they are released!

  • Sam R says:

I am just wondering what would happen to a Dad if he locked up his daughter for years in her room, because she used the end of a gun to hit her sibling on the head and take his/her money? These harsh punishments by our legal system do not seem to be keeping those who intend to do harm to another person from doing harm to another person. It seems that some type of education would do a lot more help than incarceration. What do you think?

  • Wonderer says:

I wonder if there’s more to this story. I can’t figure out why they’d have a life sentence in the first place if one or more of the victims didn’t die. Did the crime lead to anyone’s death? If not, why life? Seems strange.

  • Louis says:

If you were one of the men ambushed at gunpoint, then struck in the head, and robbed, I think you’d find the amount of money is irrelevant to a pre-meditated violent crime.
