Yesterday Chicago Democratic Mayor Richard Michael Daley, 68 year-old, announced that he would not run for re-election for his 7th term in 2011. For more than 20 years Daley has served as mayor of Chicago; a city with a population of 3 million people. He is the second longest serving mayor, after his father, Mayor Richard J. Daley.

Although countless members of the mayors' administration had being plagued by corruption, hiring scandals, innumerable other investigation of alleged wrong doing, convictions and jail sentences, the mayor himself was never charged or convicted of any wrong doing.

As the Daley political machine in Chicago comes to an end, a long line of want-to-be mayors are already positioning themselves for the looming Feb. 22 election.

More than a half-dozen aldermen are pondering a bid for mayor. They're joined by several candidates already running for other offices in the upcoming November 2 state election.

Alderman Robert Fioretti, 2nd Ward, recently announced that he will make a decision in the next 10 days. Other potential candidates include Ald. Scott Waguespack, 32nd Ward, Sandi Jackson, 7th Ward; Thomas Allen, 38th Ward; Brendan Reilly, 42nd Ward; Thomas Tunney, 44th Ward; and former 1st Ward Ald. Manny Flores; White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel; Retiring Cook County Assessor James Houlihan; U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.; Lisa Madigan, the state's attorney general; and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.
