Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech emphasized respect, peace and equality for every human being.
On August 28, 2010, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and their tea party friends plan to host a rally on the 47th anniversary and at the same location (Lincoln Memorial site) of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream speech.
Beck's website says the "Restoring Honor" rally is to pay tribute to America's military personnel and others "who embody our nation's founding principles of integrity, truth and honor." It urges citizens to attend and "help us restore the values that founded this great nation." Pictures of the colossal “Restoring Honor” stage being erected in front of the Lincoln Memorial can be seen on Beck's website.
"This is going to be an iconic event," Beck says. "This is going to be a moment that you'll never be able to paint people as haters, racists, none of it. This is a moment, quite honestly, that I think we reclaim the civil rights movement. It has been so distorted and so turned upside down. It is an abomination."
Although Beck claims that the event is not political, his critics dismissed his claims. Rev. Al Sharpton said."When we heard about Glenn Beck, it was puzzling, because if you read Dr. King's speech, it just doesn't gel with what Mr. Beck or Mrs. Palin are representing."
