After two weeks of deliberations, Chicago jurors today convicted Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich of only one of the 24 counts against him. The jury also announced it was deadlocked on the other 23 counts. Blagojevich was convicted of making false statements to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The 24 charges included fraud, racketeering and attempted extortion. Blagojevich's trial stemmed out of allegations he tried to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama to the highest bidder.

Judge James B. Zagel of Federal District Court accepted the jury’s verdict on the false-statements count on Tuesday and declared a mistrial on the remaining counts, the bulk of the case. Prosecutors immediately announced that they intend to retry the case "as quickly as possible." Blagojevich could possible face five years in prison on the single guilty charge.

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on any of the four counts against

Mr. Blagojevich’s older brother, Robert, who had served as the former governor's fund-raiser.
