On July 26, 1847, Liberia became the FIRST independent country in Africa and the first country with a Black female president. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is Liberia's current president.

Liberia has three branches of government and is modeled after that of the United States. Liberia's name is a somewhat unorthodox derivative from Latin 'liber' ('free'). Its capital city, Monrovia, is named after President James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States.
Liberia is located on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. As of the 2008 Census, the county's population was 3.5 million. At 43,000 sq/mi, Liberia is approximately the size of the state of Mississippi.
