An unprovoked aggression or murder against an innocent person is incomprehensible. It is even more gut wrenching and frightening when the attack is against an armed police officer in uniform.

On Sunday, July 18, Chicago police officer Michael R. Bailey, 62 year-old was shot to death outside his home, after finishing an overnight shift of detail guarding of Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley's home. It was reported that at 6 a.m., while still in uniform and in front of his home at 74th Street and Evans Avenue. As he attempted to clean out his brand new Buick, three suspects opened fire in an attempted robbery.

Officer Bailey had just purchased his car as a retirement gift to himself. His retirement was due in couple of weeks. Police sources say as many as three suspects opened fire  while in front of  the officer home – near the intersection of 74th Street and Evans Avenue.

Bailey, a 20-year veteran is sadly the third Chicago Police officer to be gunned down in the last 60 days. On July 7, Officer Thor Soderberg was shot and killed with his own weapon outside a police facility at 61st and Racine. On May 19, Officer Thomas Wortham was shot and killed outside of his parents' home as four men tried to steal his motorcycle. A common denominator here is that all of the officers were armed and killed by African-American males between the ages of 19 – 26 years old. Eyewitnesses described the suspect in Officer Bailey's death as a black or African American male, between the ages of 19 and 21, with "very short hair," and a tall, slim build. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a brown belt.

What saddens me about urban American is their code of silence. Somebody out there knows, saw or remembers something to help put the monster that killed Office Bailey behind bars. There is nothing wrong by snitching for Justice!

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is offering a $10,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone who kills or shoots a police officer. You may call Area 2 Detectives at 312-747-8272 or dial 911.
