Mess and messes at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
The temporary removal of the contempt charge was due to the organization providing partial financial records to the sorority’s former president, Julia Purnell. Ms. Purnell along with other members had sued the organization to have access to its financial records.![]()
AKA President Barbara A. McKinzie, is accused of stealing the sorority’s funds for personal use and pet projects, including a salary and retirement for the traditionally unpaid post and a $900,000 wax statue of herself. Court papers obtained from the court in Cook County showed that McKinzie is accused of spending $30,000 on jewelry, including an $1,100 Tiffany ring and $8,500 diamond heart; $3,600 spent on limousine service for one month; and an $800 meal at Joe’s Stone Crab in Chicago. None of the expenditures had any connection to AKA’s functions, the suit alleges.
The organization has until the end of July to provide a complete financial records. The Chicago-based organization’s corporate office is located at 5656 S. Stony Island Avenue.
