In a June 28, 2010 Supreme Court decisions, Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority by noting, "Self-defense is a basic right, recognized by many legal systems from ancient times to the present day," he also added that "individual self-defense is the central component of the Second Amendment right."
The Supreme Court struck down Chicago's strict firearm ban in a landmark decision that casts state and local gun laws into question. The 5-4 majority ruled that Oak Park and Chicago's long-standing gun ban violated an individual's right to own firearms, enshrined in the Second Amendment. The ruling is the first time the court has determined that the Constitution restricts both state and municipal gun-control powers.
Using crime statistics, the Supreme Court basically slammed Mayor Richard Daley and the Chicago Police Department for not protecting the people of Chicago. “We are told that the City’s handgun murder rate has actually increased since the ban was enacted and that Chicago residents now face one of the highest murder rates in the country and rates of other violent crimes that exceed the average in comparable cities. Chicago had more murders than any other city in the U. S., including the much larger Los Angeles and New York,” the court added.
Otis McDonald, Adam Orlov, Colleen Lawson, and David Lawson (Chicago petitioners) are just four of millions of Chicago residents who would like to keep handguns in their homes for self defense but are prohibited from doing so by Chicago’s firearms laws.
Chicago's ordinance provides that “no person shall possess any firearm unless such person is the holder of a valid registration certificate for such firearm.” The ordinance then prohibits the issuing of valid registration certificate of most handguns, thus effectively banning handgun possession by almost all private citizens who reside in the City. Like Chicago, Oak Park makes it “unlawful for any person to possess any firearm.”
Chicago and Oak Park define firearm to includes “pistols, revolvers, guns and small arms commonly known as handguns.”
Despite the Supreme Court ruling, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley says he's not going to roll over. He plans to put in place all sorts of obstacle courses to make it tougher to buy guns and easier for police to know who has them. Daley also added that he's encouraged by what he sees in D.C. and vows not go down without a fight. Prospective gun owners in D.C. now are required to take training courses that include spending one hour on a firing range and several hours in a classroom learning about gun safety. They must also pass a 20 question test based on D.C.'s firearm laws.
Considering that handgun murder rate has actually increased since the ban was enacted in Chicago and residents faced one of the highest murder rates in the country did you agreed with the Supreme Court's decision?????

I could not help but noticed, that the Mayor plans to put in place all sorts of obstacle courses to make it tougher {for law abiding citizens}to buy guns and easier for police to know who has them.
This guy must be an idiot! He should be working on laws that will put felons that are caught with the possession of guns away forever!!!!!!!!! Punish the criminals not the law abiding victims.
Daley is typical of the incompetent mayors who target law abiding citizens instead of criminals. He lives in denial of the failures of the history of gun registration. His dogged pursuit of legal gun owners fulfills the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over with the same result but expecting a different result!
Chicago needs a real mayor that will pursue criminals and get results. They don’t need Daley who has no solutions beyond more of failed programs. Daley should follow David Miller of Toronto and make way for someone who can get the job done!
