Texas Board of Education Mis-Education of Slavery
Texas' SBOE, is an elected 15 member board. The Commissioner of Education oversee the public education system of Texas in accordance with the Texas Education Code. With a 10-5 Republican majority, SBOE is preparing to impose its so-called conservative ideology, and partisan agenda on the kids of the Lone Star State.
SBOE is proposing changes to Texas social studies standards. The majority SBOE members are saying that the changes are a long-overdue correction to a curriculum that too often alter religion and caters to liberal views. Among the changes SBOE is proposing: students would be required to learn about the “unintended consequences” of affirmative action, Title IX, and the Great Society, and would need to study conservative icons like Phyllis Schlafly, the Heritage Foundation, and the Moral Majority.
SBOE also plan on changing all references to the slave trade to the “Atlantic triangular trade,” American “imperialism” changed to “expansionism,” and all references to “capitalism” have been replaced with “free enterprise.” A memo from their recent board meeting shows the Republican and Democrat board members debating back and forward on how to refer to America's 44th president. The Republican members were suggesting Barack H. Obama instead of spelling out his "funny" middle name, Hussein.
As a state, Texas has great influence over the textbook industry. Decisions that are made in Texas with regards to changes in the 1st through 12th grades textbooks usually have an impact across school districts throughout the entire country.
