Indicted Illinois Governor Blagojevich Speaks on Ethics in Politics

According to The Daily Northwestern newspaper, former Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich will speak at the university at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2. The event is titled “Ethics in Politics: An evening with Former Governor Rod Blagojevich.” The event is sponsored by College Democrats of Northwestern University.

The former Illinois Governor was indicated April 2009 on 16 counts, including racketeering conspiracy. On February 4th, he was re-indicated with addition charges making a total of 24-count indictment. The revised indictment does not allege any new wrongdoing by Blagojevich but includes eight new counts that do not rely on honest services fraud. The new charges include attempted extortion, racketeering, bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery and conspiracy to commit extortion.

Blagojevich was Illinois' 40th governor. He was first elected in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. He was born in Chicago in 1956 and graduated from Northwestern University in 1979. He earned his law degree from Pepperdine in 1983.

George Ryan, the former Governor prior to Blagojevich is currently serving prison time for lying to investigators and accepting cash, gifts and loans in return for his official actions as governor. Three former Illinois governors have gone to prison while two were acquitted within the past 35 years.
