Chocolate City congratulates Serena Williams on winning her 5th Australian Open title

We congratulate Serena Williams on winning her 5th Australian Open title. Serena put an end to Justine Henin’s hopes of winning a Grand Slam title on her return from retirement. Sarena won with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win in the Australian Open final on Saturday.

Serena's outstanding 12th singles major matched Billie Jean King’s career total. Billie King was at the stadium on Saturday night to take part in a pre-match ceremony honoring her 40^thyear anniversary. “Billie, we are tied,” Williams said. “So I’ve reached my goal.”

According to the Associate Press, “Williams' five Australian titles is the most by any woman in the Open Era, since 1968, surpassing the four held by Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles. Court holds 11 Australian Open titles overall, most coming before 1968.”

Serena fell on her back in celebration after the final match point and before shaking hands with Henin at the net.

The excited and exuberant Serena we saw after winning today was not the same person we saw on September 12, 2009 when she got a bit hot under the collar over a call that was made by the line judge and vented her frustration by shouting: “If I could, I would take this fucking ball and shove it down your fucking throat!”
