A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck 10 miles from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday. A Richter Scale of 7.0 to 7.9 is a major earthquake which usually cause serious damage over larger areas.
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and has suffered a number of recent disasters, including four hurricanes and storms in 2008 that killed hundreds.
