October 23, 2009 marked the 8th year since Apple designed, launched and marketed the iPod. Developed under the leadership of Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Apple Corporation Inc.; iPod has forever changed the course of media and entertainment distribution since it was unveiled.

Just in case you are reading this blog from a different planet and don't know what an iPod is; it is a portable media player and data storage device that lets users listen to music on the go. In my case, my iPod is not only a portable media but also a portable applications launcher, calendar, and a contact storage. iPod product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the touchscreen iPod Touch, the video-capable iPod Nano, and the compact iPod Shuffle.

Not Without My iPod

Without a doubt, iPod has become an indispensable traveling companion for most people including myself. It is by far one of the best simple piece of equipment made in this century. Someone once said that they are impeccably designed and built like a tank. They work seamlessly with lots of free applications. I have personally used it on both a Mac and a PC. It works equally well on whichever system you use. There are infinitely more accessories out there for the iPod than those for any other player. In addition to charging my iPod with my car radio, I also used it to listen to the nice sound that is produced by my car speakers. According to  Kottke, here are 50 thing you can do with your iPod besides listen to music.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Most iPod listeners appeared to be far removed from their surroundings while listening to their iPods. A Washington

based research organization, The Urban Institute, released an interesting report couple of years ago. Their report suggested that the proliferation of iPods helps account for the nationwide rise in violent crime in 2005 and 2006. They proposed that the rise in violent offending and the explosion in the sales of iPods and other portable media devices is more than coincidental. They suggested that over the two years period, Americans experienced an iCrime wave. If you own an iPod, and are using it, white wires hang down from your ears. It's much more noticeable and easy to grab than, say, goods in a parked car. This opportunity for violence increases exponentially, the report suggests, when a thief can go after goods worn by someone. Unlike other items, such as an expensive gym shoes or jacket, an iPod is everywhere and is easy to steal especially since one size fits all.

The problem with iPod related crime is not unique to cities in the U.S. Many boroughs around London are being hit with a rampant iPod crime wave. The borough of Lambeth has posted iPod warning signs on streets that are known to be hotspots for iPod theft. These streets are marked with warning signs, depicting what appears to be an iPod shadow guy from the classic iPod commercials about to get mugged by a big bulky jacket wearing guy.

Your iPod Playlist

I remember reading a New York Times report that stated that former President George W. Bush was a fan of country music and classic rock, but he also likes "a little bit of hard core and honky tonk", at least that what his iPod playlist suggested. The article further suggested that President Bush's 250 songs include country greats George Jones, Alan Jackson and My Sharona by the Knack. President Bush had an aide download music for him and he listens to it while mountain biking.

So the question of the day is, what is on your iPod and if you do not mind, what is the size of your iPod?
