As President Barack Obama prepares to engage our PreK through 12th graders on September 8 from the Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, some parents are disguising themselves and camouflaging under the respectable and good names of conservatism and the Republican Party.
It is clear that some parents are using the president’s speech to promote their own selfish political agenda. The president’s speech, which will be broadcast on the White House Web site and by C-SPAN cable, was criticized by Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer. Greer called the president’s speech an attempt by Obama to “indoctrinate America’s children to his socialist agenda.” Greer is not as stupid as he appeared, he is aware that even Hitler knew if he said Jews were bad for Germany enough times, that it would arouse enough anti-Semitic and nationalistic hatred towards German Jews. Repeatedly referring to the president as Hitler, a socialist or a cult of personality will eventually find believers among some of our sick brothers and sisters.
Despite Greer’s selfish and unsubstantiated rhetoric, two of the larger Florida districts, Miami-Dade and Hillsborough, plan to have classes and watch the speech. Students whose parents object will not have to watch.
Idiotic leader like Greer is nothing but a hypocrite. Former Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr., and Bush Jr. delivered speeches to students. Greer was around at the time but did not see any signs of indoctrination by the former presidents. Another hypocrite, Oklahoma’s Republican state Sen. Steve Russell, recently stated, “As far as I am concerned, this is not civics education – it gives the appearance of creating a cult of personality.” He also added, “This is something you’d expect to see in North Korea or in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.”
The so-called conservatives, driven by radio pundits and bloggers, are urging schools and parents to boycott the president’s address. They are saying President Obama is using his speech to promote a political agenda and is overstepping the boundaries of federal involvement in schools. Well, while Greer and others are pulling their kids out of school to stay home and watch Sponge Bob and listen to X-rated musical lyrics, my kids with be listening to the President of the Untied States of America.
