Gone are the days when a male or female did not need to do much to prove their real sex. It was simply a matter of lifting one skirt or dropping one pants. It used to be easy to determine a real female from her curvy hips or bodacious ta-ta’s – something you just can’t rely on these days.

With the advancement in medical procedures such as Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS), Trachea Shave Surgery (Adam apple shaving) , Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS), Clitoroplasty and Inner labia construction with clitoral hood to name a few, it is becoming almost impossible to visually determine a woman from a man or vice versa.

I am not insinuating or implying that Caster Semenya, the South African 18 year-old running star is a transgender. It is

however, a shocker to me that the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) is requesting that she undergo a gender verification test and must be seen by five medical specialist in order to determine her actual sex or should I say her “birth sex”.

The South African Athletics Association are positive that their star athlete, Caster, who recently won the women’s world 800 meters title is a female. She crushed her rivals by streaking away to secure victory in a time of one minute 55.45 seconds — the best in the world this year and more than eight seconds quicker than her fastest effort of 2008. She finished more than two seconds clear of second-placed Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei, during the 2007 champion.

Caster has said she is not bothered by the questions over her gender and was simply focusing on improving her times.

On Wednesday, Caster’s father Jacob Semenya was quoted as saying, the accusations were unfounded. He also added, "She is my little girl. I raised her and I have never doubted her gender. She is a woman and I can repeat that a million times."
