Chicago born rapper, Jeremih Felton
The Chicago born rapper, Jeremih Felton, popularly know for his erotic song, “Birthday Sex” has agreed to use “Twitter” to encourage about 70,000 of his Chicago Public Schools (CPS) followers to get back to Sept. 8.
From every indications, Jeremiah appeared to be a decent, and focused young man with a well-grounded family background. He is a Morgan Park High School alumnus who graduated at 16 year-old and studied engineering at the University of Illinois before transferring to Columbia College to pursue music.
CPS’ CEO Ron Huberman denied that the Board of Education was condoning pre-marital sex by asking Jeremih to send a pre-Labor Day back-to-school “tweet” to his followers.
In today’s Chicago Sun-Times, Huberman is quoted as saying “He [Jeremih] had 70 million hits on his MySpace page. For us to be naïve and believe that this is not what our students are listening to would be not living in the world where our students are.” He also added, “We don’t condone any behavior we think is not healthy for our students. . . . But, he’s a great role model for our kids. He graduated from high school. He went on to school for engineering. He’s staying in school. That’s the message. This is part of what will be a continuing strategy to reach kids the way they communicate with each other.”
Alderman Freddrenna Lyle of Chicago’s Sixth Ward said the misogynistic lyrics of “Birthday Sex” should not disqualify Jeremih. “He’s the one who can get their attention,” Lyle said. “We’re talking about young people who see more on broadcast TV every night. . . . than he’s talking about in that song. It’s not the way I would like it. It’s not the world I grew up in. I turn on TV and see things that shock me. But that’s the world we’re living in. All we’re doing is acknowledging that reality,” she said.
“It says that everyone needs education — not just people who are singing, ‘Glory Be to God.’ Even the people [who] are singing the racy songs need education to become famous.”
Chicago’s public schools have topped the number of students slain in the 2007-2008 and 2006-2007 school years — 27 and 31, respectively.
On the whole, most parent think that CPS and Jeremih partnership is not only a controversial choice but seems a bit ludicrous.
