Our team arrived in Detroit today to cover the upcoming special election. We drove around the good, the bad and the ugly parts of the city trying to engage the locals about the upcoming special mayoral election which is scheduled for Tuesday, May, 5.

Actually, most of the people we spoke with were not aware of the election, did not know the two candidates or weren’t interested at all. To put it bluntly, we did not sense any real enthusiasm for the Tuesday election which is only 5 days away. Wake up, Detroit you have a special election and you must be a part of a new beginning in returning dignity and integrity to a once outstanding city.

Both Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. and his opponent, Dave Bing are competing to complete the term of disgraced former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. has served since September when he replaced Kilpatrick. Some are saying that he comes from the same political system that has failed Detroit. Dave Bing is a businessman and professional basketball Hall of Famer.

Both candidates are saying security will be their top priority if elected. On November 3, 2009, a general election will pick a mayor for the 2010-2013 term.

Sound Off: Will you vote in this special election? Why or why not?
