The Republican Senator of Nevada, John Ensign, criticized President Barack Obama by saying it was "irresponsible" for President Obama to have been seen "laughing and joking" with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the Summit of the Americas on Friday.
Ensign added, "This is a person who is one of the most anti-American leaders in the entire world," he told CNN’s John King on State of The Union. "He is a brutal dictator and human rights violations are very, very prevalent in Venezuela. And you have to be careful."
"When you’re talking about the prestige of the United States and the presidency of the United States, you have to be careful who you’re seen joking around with," he also said.
So let’s take a look at Ensign’s so-call concerns he has against President Obama for been seen with Chavez:
-
Chavez is the most anti-American leaders in the entire world.
-
Chavez is a brutal dictator and human rights violator.
-
He is concern about the prestige of the United States and the presidency
Under Chavez’s leadership, Venezuela continues to be one of the largest and leading supplier of imported crude and refined petroleum products to the United States. Venezuela send about 1.4 million barrels of oil per day to the U.S. Venezuela is also the owner of the Citgo gasoline chain. One can not imagine the most anti-American leaders in the entire world working with the US in such venture. Or, is the government irresponsible for purchasing oil from the most anti-American leaders in the world.
On the issue of a brutal dictator and human rights violations that are very, very prevalent, the Senator seems to have a selective memory. Past administrations have turned their heads to the other side and embraced some of the world’s worst leaders when it is conducive to America’s foreign policies.
Concerns about the prestige of the United States and the presidency? What prestige, is there any more prestige of the office of the President after the Bush term?
Being a gentleman as he is, President Obama brushed aside criticism of the appearance, saying, "It’s unlikely that as a consequence of me shaking hands or having a polite conversation with Mr. Chavez that we are endangering the strategic interests of the United States." He was Speaking in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago,
"Even with the imaginative crowd, I think that you would be hard pressed to paint a scenario where US interests would be damaged as a consequence of us having a more constructive relationship with Venezuela," he said.
It appears that Ensign is suggesting that President Obama continue with President Bush’s destructive and failed foreign policies?
