The God of Bishop Gene Robinson

Bishop Gene Robinson is the openly gay Episcopal bishop who helped advise President-elect Barack Obama on gay rights issues during his campaign. Robinson was recently asked by the Obama’s team to deliver the invocation at a kickoff inaugural event on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, couple of days before the inauguration ceremony. Robinson had reacted angrily to the selection of Warren, who opposes gay marriage, calling it a "slap in the face."

Some see the selection of Robinson as a sort of pacifier to appease the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people that were upset about Obama’s decision to give Rev. Rick Warren, a prominent megachurch pastor from California who opposes gay marriage, the high-profile role of giving the invocation at the inaugural ceremonies on Jan. 20.

The Conservative Christian, Conservative Evangelical Christian, Christian Fundamentalists or whatever they called themselves are literally fuming with rage over Robinson’s selection and I can almost imagine that if there was an equivalent of fatwa in the Christian faith they will definitely issue it against Robinson. The Conservative Evangelical Christians have been around for years and there is absolutely no record showing them picking up arms against slavery, lynching, racism or other barbaric crimes or social injustices that are committed or were committed in the past.

As a clarification, the Conservative, evangelical Christianity in America is not inherently or necessarily racist. However, there has been significant convergence between racism, White Supremacy, and conservative Christianity throughout American history. Not only have conservative evangelical Christians been leading defenders of slavery, racism, and segregation, but there are aspects of evangelical doctrine which hide behind that Bible and encourage continuation of racism in America.

I am tempted to refer to them as cherry picking Conservative Evangelical Christian. Oops, I have just sinned. I have violated the passage in the Bible that states "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone." The "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone" incident is one of the most well-known lessons of the Bible. A woman, who had been caught in the act of adultery was brought to Jesus Christ by the scribes and Pharisees. As a test to see if the Merciful Messiah was a liberal in matters of the Law of God. In response to their deceitful and hypocritical fuming, He didn’t condemn the woman, not because He condoned her sin, but because the men who brought the woman to Him were Hypocrites.

Until I, a hypocrite, can first take the log out of my own eye, I will not be able to see clearly enough to take the speck out of my neighbor’s eye.

I am convinced that the God of Bishop Gene Robinson is the same God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the God of our fathers, that hath glorified his Son Jesus.
