During a press conference today in Baghdad, Iraq, an Iraqi reporter called U.S. President George W. Bush a dog in Arabic while throwing his size 10 shoes at the president.
The Iraqi security officers and U.S. secret service agents eventually leaped at the man and dragged him struggling and screaming out of the room where Bush was giving a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
Bush ducked couple of times while the shoes missed him by inches. One of the shoe sailed directly over Bush’s head as he stood next to Maliki. Bush smiled uncomfortably and Maliki looked strained.
From every indication it seems like security was slack. Thank God, the Iraqi journalist did not have a gun. The CNN video showed that both the Iraqi security officers and U.S. secret service agents were slow to respond. As a matter of fact the video showed some of the U.S. secret service agents coming into the conference room after they apparently heard the ruckus.
"It doesn’t bother me," Bush said, urging everyone to calm down as noise broke out in the conference room.
When asked about the incident shortly after, Bush made light of it. "I didn’t feel the least threatened by it," he said.
Other Iraqi journalists apologized on behalf of their colleague, a television journalist.
Bush is in Baghdad on a farewell visit before he leaves office in January.
