The nerve and audicity of Sen. John McCain and his dumb vice presidential candidate to launched an all out swift boat-style attacks against Barack instead of addressing the country’s real problems. The fact is Sen. John McCain is expected to lose this election, however, the 72-year-old soon-to-be retiree was expected to lose graciously and honorably.
Sen. Barack Obama said on Sunday at an event in Asheville, North Carolina. "Sen. McCain and his operatives are gambling that they can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance. They’d rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up."
The comments come a day after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain’s vice presidential running mate, claimed that Obama associated "with terrorists who targeted our own country."
I am not sure if Ms. Palin knows who she was referring to when she said: “the terrorists who targeted our own country.” Anyway, she was attempting to link Barack Obama to a former member of the radical Weather Underground Organization that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, now holds the position of distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Although never convicted of any crime, he reporterly told the New York Times in September 2001, "I don’t regret setting bombs…I feel we didn’t do enough."
Both Obama and Ayers were members of the board of an anti-poverty group, the Woods Funds of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002. Ayers contributed $200 to Obama’s re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate in April 2001. They lived within a few blocks of each other in Hyde Park, Chicago, and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles like must professionals in the Hyde Park area.
Senator Obama had strongly condemned the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. Barack Obama was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is not only ridiculous but a cheap shot from McCain and Sarah.
The McCain campaign shot back on Sunday, saying its accusations are "true facts," and not "smears." "The last four weeks of this election will be about whether the American people are willing to turn our economy and national security over to Barack Obama, a man with little record, questionable judgment, and ties to radical figures like unrepentant domestic terrorist William Ayers," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.
"Americans need to ask themselves if they’ve ever befriended an unrepentant terrorist, or had a convicted felon help them buy their house — because those aren’t smears, those are true facts about Barack Obama."
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain’s questionable judgment, and a convicted felon and the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image.
In response to McCain’s “guilt-by-association” tactics, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to their new website, KeatingEconomics.com, which will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.
With regards to the Keating issue, the Obama’s campaign has been notably disciplined in not talking about Keating, so this rollout will perhaps have a bit more pop in the media than the Ayers story.
Keating is a story both more damaging for McCain than the Ayers story is for Obama who was 8-year-old when Ayers committed his crime. The story of McCain and Keating is not guilt by association; but rather a guilt by guilt. McCain’s problem isn’t that he knew Keating in activities unconnected to his wrongdoing; it’s that Keating, in the course of his wrondoing, gave McCain money and tried, with a bit of success, to use him to influence regulators. It’s also part of the case Obama’s making that McCain has opposed necessarily financial regulations. McCain’s opposition to financial regulations has contributed to serious financial mess the U.S.A is facing today.
On the issue of Sarah Palin’s investigation, it appears that the Obama’s campaign are doing the right thing by refusing to grant her the needed attention. Ms. Palin is being investigated for pressuring the public safety commissioner to fire a state trooper who was involved in a contentious divorce from Ms. Palin’s sister and then fired the commissioner when he would not dismiss the trooper.
