Chicago Comedian Bernie Mac (real name: Bernard Jeffery McCullough), 50-year-old, died early Saturday at the Northwestern Hospital in Chicago from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist told the Chicago Tribune.

Just couple of days ago, it was reported that Mac was "responding well to treatment," according to publicist Danica Smith, who did not disclose when he was hospitalized. His illness was unrelated to his diagnosis of sarcoidosis, which has been in remission since 2005, she said.

Bernie was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 5, 1957 and was raised by a single

mother, Mary McCullough, who died of cancer when Bernie was sixteen. Bernie attended Chicago Vocational Career Academy located on the South Side of Chicago. During his 20s he worked in a variety of jobs; he was a furniture mover, UPS agent and a bread delivery sales representative. Bernie had claimed that he was whipped with a belt by both his mother and grandmother during his childhood.

Bernie is survived by his wife Rhonda McCullough; a daughter, Je’Niece, 30; a son-in-law; and a grandchild, Jasmine, whom Bernie affectionately calls "Jazzy".
