While doing my regular exercises this morning at the YMCA located at 63st. and Hayes Drive in Chicago, I listened to my favorite playlists which include songs by Johnny Guitar Watson, Marvin Gaye, Roy Hammond, aka “Roy-C”, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield to name a few.
Something caught my attention from the lyrics of the songs and I began to reflected on their messages. Although all of these songs were written and released over 24 years ago, they in one way or another conveyed the social-economic and political conundrum we face regarding the high prices of gas, high infliction rates, high taxes, high job losses, high foreclosure rates and the current wind of political change that is blowing across America.
My reflective mode started after listening to the following songs:
Marvin Gaye’s - “What going on,”
Johnny Guitar Watson’s – “What the hell is this? and Ain’t that a bitch,”
Roy C’s – “Open letter to the president, and Impeach the president,”
Sam Cooke’s – “A Change Is Gonna Come,”
Curtis Mayfield’s – “Keep on pushing, People get ready, We’re a winner, and We got to have peace.”
I asking the http://www.chocolatecity.cc/blog community to share some songs that they think reflect what’s happening in today’s socio-economic and political climate. You might need to download and listen or search for the lyrics and read the words of a song if you are not familiar with it.
