DNC Rules Committee increased goalpost to 2,118

The DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee concluded their day long meeting with a new goalpost of 2,118 to clinch the Democratic party nomination. Previous target was 2024.

According to the committee Co-chairwoman Alexis Herman in her opening remarks “seating all of the states’ delegates is not on the table.” She added “We had many states that wanted to violate the timing. We needed to send a very strong signal in order to prevent additional states from moving forward.”

Members of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee also voted on today to seat all of Florida’s and Michigan’s delegation to the party’s national convention and give their delegates a half vote each.

After today’s meeting, Obama will have picked up a total of 32 delegates in Michigan, including superdelegates who have already committed, and 36 in Florida. Clinton picked up 38 in Michigan, including superdelegates, and 56.5 in Florida. Obama’s total increased to 2,052, and Clinton had 1,877.5. Obama is 66 delegates short of the 2,118 but still within striking distance after the three final primaries are held in the next three days.

Today’s meeting was not all smooth sailing. Dozens of sign-toting, chanting protesters gathered outside the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, the site of Saturday’s events, to have their say on what the decision should be.

Committee member and a Clinton Superdelegate, Harold Ickes angrily informed the party’s Rules Committee that Clinton had instructed him to reserve her right to appeal the matter to the Democrats’ credentials committee, which could potentially drag the matter to the party’s convention in August. “There’s been a lot of talk about party unity — let’s all come together, and put our arms around each other,” said Harold Ickes. “I submit to you ladies and gentlemen, hijacking four delegates … is not a good way to start down the path of party unity.”

Democrats fear that a Clinton appeal and a protracted battle over the issue all the way to the convention could split the party and weaken it’s chances of winning the White House in November.
