Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee
During a recent speech before the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama dodging a gun aimed at him.
In Mr. Huckabee own words “That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he’s getting ready to speak, somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.” the former Arkansas governor, made those comments to a laughing audience.
Mr. Huckabee later apologized: “I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama,” the statement said. “I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.”
Democratic hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton
On May 3rd. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Senator from New York said “I think people have short memories,” she further noted “Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn’t wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual.”
Sen. Clinton later apologized: “The Kennedys have been much on my mind in the last days because of Sen. [Edward] Kennedy, and I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever,” she added.
Fox contributor Liz Trotta, a former Washington Times editor
After apparently confusing Obama with Osama bin Laden the political analyst said she hoped both men would be ‘knocked off’.
“And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama, uh Obama. Well, both, if we could,” Fox contributor Liz Trotta, a former Washington Times editor made these remarks while being interviewed by host Eric Shawn for Fox News on Sunday. Shawn replied: “Talk about how you really feel.”
Ms. Trotta later apologized: “Yes, I am so sorry about what happened yesterday and the lame attempt at humor. I fell all over myself, making it appear that I wished Barack Obama harm or any other candidate, for that matter, and I sincerely regret it and apologize to anybody I have offended. She further added, “It is a very colorful political season, and many of us are making mistakes and saying things we wish we had not said.”
I am almost very certain that the statements by Huckabee, Clinton and Trotta are in no way an intention or suggestion for people to harm Mr. Obama.
However, there might be an emotional immature person out there that might literally take their words as is; thinking that they will be ensuring their status as a hero to either Clinton, Huckabee, Trotta or the media.
An apology after dumb comments, wish seems to be a common denominator, does not matter because the subliminal messages or words are already out there. The rule of thumb in my opinion,is if one can not comfortably make an assassination joke with replacing their mother’s or father’s name in the joke then it is not in good taste.
